My Dad absolutely loved to golf.

It brought him the much-needed balance from the stress of owning a stock brokerage firm and, in later years, the high-risk world of venture capital. No matter what his pursuit—his next winning start-up or another round of golf, he’d always maintain a great sense of humor.

Like every avid sportsman, he had his favorite equipment and attire—the kind that offers the best performance and “fits” just right, in terms of style and comfort. But after an annual check-up with his doctor several years ago, his game and life had to change.

A skin cancer diagnosis was followed by doctor’s orders: wear a bigger hat with more shade. Dad began searching for a familiar, baseball-like hat that offered the needed coverage. He explored big and bigger hats, from cowboy to sombrero, but nothing felt right. For a while, he settled on a “bucket-style.” But all these choices left him embarrassed to hit the links with them.

Still not satisfied, he continued his search, but his condition grew worse. Despite his declining health and the need to wear bulky, ugly hats, he still tried to play the game he loved. Even if he was unable to finish 18 holes.

In 2011, my Dad lost his battle with cancer. But he inspired me to create a company that allowed people like him...with a passion for the outdoors ... to stay safe, stay active and enjoy life.
